The most common 9-a-side formations are 3-2-3, 3-3-2, 4-3-1 and 3-4-1. If you are not sure where to start, use the 3-2-3: three defenders, two centre midfielders and a front three. Build your team sheet below, or read how each shape works.

Who plays 9-a-side?
From the 2026-27 season, the FA's FutureFit changes make 9v9 the format for under-12s and under-13s (it used to be under-11s and under-12s), with 11v11 starting at under-14s.
The 4 most common 9-a-side formations
Formations are written from the back, not counting the goalkeeper: a 3-2-3 has three defenders, two midfielders and three forwards. Treat the shape as a starting point; young players should still try different positions.
3-2-3
Three defenders, two centre midfielders and a front three. One of the most popular 9v9 shapes, with width at the top of the pitch.
Strengths
Wingers stretch the opposition
Three forwards can press high
A natural step towards 4-3-3 and 3-4-3 at 11v11
Weaknesses
Two midfielders can be outnumbered
Wingers must track back
Best for: Attacking teams with quick wide players.
3-3-2
Three defenders, three midfielders and two strikers. Balanced, with a strike partnership.
Strengths
Strong in midfield
Two strikers work together
Leads into 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 at 11v11
Weaknesses
Width at the top relies on the wide midfielders
Wide midfielders cover a lot of ground
Best for: Balanced teams with two forwards who link well.
4-3-1
A back four, three midfielders and a striker. The closest 9v9 shape to an 11v11 back four.
Strengths
Teaches full-backs and centre-back roles for 11v11
Solid and compact
Plenty of passing triangles in midfield
Weaknesses
The striker can be isolated
Can become defensive if the full-backs stay back
Best for: Teams preparing for 11v11 with a back four.
3-4-1
Three defenders, four midfielders and a striker. Controls the middle with wide midfielders for width.
Strengths
Numbers in midfield
Wide midfielders give width in attack and cover in defence
Weaknesses
The striker can be isolated
Wide midfielders need plenty of energy
Best for: Teams that like to keep the ball and build through midfield.
Goalkeeper: Organises the defence and starts attacks with passes out from the back.
Defenders: A back three or four that learns to defend as a unit and play out under pressure.
Midfielders: Link defence and attack, and start to take on specialist roles such as holding or attacking.
Forwards: One to three players who press, stretch the opposition and finish chances.
Coaching tips for 9-a-side
Keep it simple. One or two instructions per position are plenty. The shape matters less than players knowing where to find space.
Rotate positions. At youth level, give everyone time in defence, midfield and attack. It builds better players and keeps them interested.
Training the shape in small-sided games. Set up games with the same numbers and shape you play on matchday, then add one coaching point at a time. Plan it in the free session planner.
Share the plan before the match. Send players and parents the team sheet from the builder above so everyone knows their position.
Show Your Players How the Shape Moves
