2v1 Soccer Drill: Attack to Goal

In this 2v1 soccer drill two attackers set off from 30 m out against a single defender and a keeper. The ball carrier's job is to commit the defender; the supporting player's job is to be in the right place when that happens.

It teaches the most common decision in attacking play: pass or keep it. Use it after 1v1 work or before a counter-attacking game, with players rotating through attacker and defender roles.

Setup

Mark out an area 30 m long and 35 m wide that runs out from the goal, with a keeper in goal. Two attackers start on discs on the bottom line, one on each side of center. One defender starts in the middle of the area, a little closer to the bottom line than to goal. Rotate the four roles after every few reps and keep spare balls behind the attackers.

How it works

  1. One attacker carries the ball forward at the defender, the other runs wide to support, and the defender steps across to close down the ball.
  2. With the defender committed, the carrier slips the ball across to the free attacker and keeps running toward goal.
  3. The free attacker shoots at goal.

Coaching points

  • Ball carrier: run straight at the defender to make them commit
  • Supporting player: stay wide and level with the ball, not behind it
  • Pass when the defender comes to you; shoot or keep going when they don't
  • Finish first time when you can
  • After passing, keep running for the rebound or a return ball

Make it harder

  • A second defender recovers from behind
  • Time limit: score within six seconds
  • The attackers start from a pass in from the coach, so the first touch matters

Make it easier

  • The defender starts deeper, closer to goal
  • The defender is passive and only blocks lanes

Adapting it by age

U8–U10

Use a 25 × 25 m area and a passive defender at first. Count a goal whether it comes from a pass or a dribble, and praise the attacker who spots the free teammate.

U12–U14

Use the default 30 × 35 m area with a fully active defender and a six-second limit. Ask the pair to talk: "with you" from the support player tells the carrier where they are.

U15 to adult

Add a recovering defender who starts level with the attackers, making it 2v1 that becomes 2v2. Only allow one touch for the final pass and finish.

Common mistakes

The carrier passes too early, before the defender has committed. Tell them to dribble until the defender steps toward them, then release; the defender's movement is the signal.

The support player drifts behind the ball. Ask them to stay level or slightly ahead, wide enough that the defender can't cover both players.

The carrier always passes, even when the defender stays with the support player. Reward the right choice: if the defender holds off, keep going and shoot.

FAQ

How do you defend a 2v1?
Delay. The defender should stand between the two attackers, slow the ball carrier down, and try to force a sideways pass rather than diving in.

What age can play a 2v1?
From about U8. Younger players often dribble every time, which is fine at first; start with a passive defender to help them see the pass.
